History of Ramakrishna Mission

In the year 1897, Swami Vivekananda, the Chief Disciple of the Hindu Spiritual Saint Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa set up the Ramakrishna Mission inspired by the life and teachings of His Master, with the motto, “Atmano Mokshartham Jagad-hitaya Chah”. Translated into English, it means ‘For one’s own salvation, and for the good of the world’.

To this day, the phrase remains not only the motto of the Mission but also the motivation that drives the disciples and devotees of the Order. Though primarily a religious/spiritual organization, the Mission carries out humanitarian activities in the field of education, and also medical and relief work through its many branches in India and abroad.
